Job Description

GIS Technician

Location: Houston, TX (100% in-office)

Compensation: $24–$26/hour + overtime (1.5x)

I’m currently supporting a well-established, growing environmental consulting firm that is looking to add a GIS Technician to their Houston team. This is a growth hire, and they are ready to move quickly for the right person.

This is a practical, production-focused GIS role where the core responsibility is creating high-quality maps and figures that support environmental consulting projects. It’s ideal for someone who enjoys detail-driven work and wants to build hands-on experience in a consulting environment without being overly focused on complex analysis or highly technical GIS development.

The role

You will be supporting project managers, scientists, and engineers by producing maps and managing spatial data for a range of environmental projects including site investigation, remediation, due diligence, and compliance work.

The position is heavily focused on map production, with the majority of your time spent creating figures, cross sections, and deliverables for client reports.

Key responsibilities

• Produce clear, accurate maps and figures using ArcGIS Pro aligned with internal standards

• Prepare and manage spatial datasets, including importing, editing, and organizing geodatabases

• Carry out standard GIS tasks such as buffering, clipping, spatial joins, and attribute queries

• Digitize features and update datasets from field data and external sources

• Create layouts for reports, proposals, and client deliverables

• Support basic spatial analysis such as proximity and overlay work

• Upload and manage data within ArcGIS Online and assist with simple web maps

• Work within a ticket-based system to manage assignments and meet deadlines

• Collaborate with internal teams across multiple offices to deliver work on time

What they’re looking for

• Someone with strong, demonstrable map-making ability using ArcGIS Pro

• Background could be GIS, CAD drafting, or environmental consulting with GIS exposure

• Formal GIS degree is not required if hands-on capability is there

• CAD experience is a bonus, but not essential (no need for high-level Civil 3D)

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven consulting environment

• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks

They are open on experience level, so this could suit a strong graduate or someone with a couple of years’ experience, as long as the fundamentals are there.

What stands out

This team is looking for someone reliable who can take ownership of local Houston assignments and consistently deliver quality work, while also supporting regional teams when needed. It’s less about advanced GIS theory and more about practical execution and consistency.

Team and environment

You’ll report into the Houston leadership team while also being part of a wider GIS function, with mentorship available from an experienced GIS lead based in another office.

The business itself is a well-regarded environmental consulting firm known for delivering practical, cost-effective solutions across remediation, compliance, and environmental services. They have a strong project pipeline and a collaborative, team-oriented culture.

Additional details

• 100% office-based role due to data and workflow requirements

• No regular fieldwork expected

• Overtime available at 1.5x when applicable

• Standard benefits package included
