Job Summary

A Manga Artist , also known as a Mangaka , creates Japanese-style comics (manga) that combine storytelling, character design, and sequential art. They may work independently or as part of a publishing team, producing black-and-white or full-color pages for serialized stories, graphic novels, webtoons, or adaptations into anime. 

This role often involves both artistic execution and collaboration with editors, writers, and creative teams to meet tight deadlines while maintaining high quality and a consistent style.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and illustrate original manga concepts, characters, backgrounds, and storyboards.
• Draw complete manga pages (panels, layouts, inking, toning, and effects) using traditional (pencil/ink) or digital tools.
• Collaborate with writers, editors, and creative teams to refine story ideas, pacing, and visual elements.
• Incorporate feedback and revisions to align with publisher style guides, brand standards, or project requirements.
• Research cultural references, anatomy, perspectives, and other elements to enhance storytelling and authenticity.
• Meet strict deadlines, often working on multiple pages or chapters simultaneously while handling revisions.
• Prepare files for print or digital publication (e.g., proper resolution, file formats, lettering integration).
• For senior roles: Mentor assistants, handle paneling/inking delegation, or contribute to story/script development.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Strong artistic foundation - Proficiency in manga/anime style drawing, including dynamic poses, expressive faces, composition, perspective, and panel layout.
• Technical proficiency - Experience with digital tools such as Clip Studio Paint (preferred), Photoshop, Procreate, or similar. Traditional media skills are a plus.
• Storytelling ability - Understanding of visual narrative, pacing, and how to convey emotion/action through art.
• Portfolio - A strong portfolio demonstrating original manga pages, character sheets, and full sequences (published work is highly preferred).
• Education - Art degree, manga-specific training, or equivalent self-taught experience with a proven body of work.
• Soft skills - Ability to work under pressure, accept constructive criticism, collaborate effectively, and iterate quickly.

Preferred Experience:

• Previous manga publication credits or webcomic success.
• Knowledge of Japanese manga industry conventions (e.g., right-to-left reading, screentones).
• Experience with assistants, colorists, or cross-media adaptations (anime, games).
• Bilingual skills (English/Japanese) for international projects.
